First of all, these are difficult questions to give a definitive answer to! But I’ll do my best to make you a little wiser about wrap thicknesses.

The thickness of a baby wrap is indicated in grams per square metre (gsm)
With baby wraps, this actually indicates the weight, not the thickness, but more on that shortly. Anything under 220 gsm can be called thin, with the Calin Bleu at 120 gsm being the thinnest baby wrap in our range (as thin as a sheet!). Between 220 and 280 gsm is considered average, and above that you speak of a thicker wrap. There are even baby wraps of more than 400 gsm!

The thickness is determined by the material (e.g. cotton, linen, hemp, wool) and the weave
As I already wrote, we are actually talking about weight, not thickness. Because, as you can imagine, some materials (e.g. merino wool) are heavier than other materials (e.g. bamboo viscose) of the same thickness. But the wrap thickness does give you a reasonable idea.

Which wrap thickness should you choose?
The thickness does not tell you áeverything about a wrap, because the weave and the material count for approximately as much, but generally speaking you can say the following:

• A thin wrap is more suitable for younger and lighter children. Very thin wraps require a slightly neater and more securely tied wrap, otherwise they can start to dig in.
• A medium wrap is all-round, from newborn to preschooler. Although with larger children, you may want to use a multi-layer knot to make it a little more comfortable for yourself.
• Thick wraps you can use them for newborns, but that does require a little more experience. Due to their thickness, they feel more like a little cushion on your shoulders.
